Boys Don't Cry
Starring: Hilary Swank, Chlo?Sevigny
|
Our Critique Review: When Brandon Teena, a young man with an infectious, aw-shucks grin and an angelic face that's all angles, wanders into Falls City, Nebraska, he takes to the town like it's a second skin. In little time he's fallen in with a gang of goofy if temperamental redneck boys, found himself a girlfriend, and befriended enough people to form something of a small family.

The Brandon Teena Story
|
Our Critique Review: Brandon Teena was a handsome boy who had tremendous success with women because he always seemed to know exactly what they wanted. Perhaps it helped that Brandon Teena was born Teena Brandon, a young woman who desperately wanted to be a man.

But I'm A Cheerleader
Starring: Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall
|
Our Critique Review: A promising comedy that goes awry all too early, But I'm a Cheerleader concerns a misunderstood high school kid (Natasha Lyonne) whose parents send her to a harsh, homosexual-rehabilitation camp despite a lack of evidence that she's gay.

Chasing Amy - Criterion Collection
Starring: Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams
|
Our Critique Review: Writer-director Kevin Smith (Clerks) makes a huge leap in sophistication with this strong story about a comic-book artist (Ben Affleck) who falls in love with a lesbian (Joey Lauren Adams) and actually gets his wish that she love him, too.

Chutney Popcorn
Starring: Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles
|
Our Critique Review: Chutney Popcorn takes up where quirky lesbian-themed comedy Go Fish left off. The twist? Reena (director Nisha Ganatra) is of Indian descent, but her girlfriend, Lisa (Law & Order's Jill Hennessy), is not. This isn't a problem in and of itself. Reena's mother, however, views her daughter's sexual orientation as a "disability" and describes Lisa as Reena's "college roommate."

Claire of the Moon
Starring: Trisha Todd, Karen Trumbo
|
Our Critique Review: Every stereotype in the history of lesbian movies applies in this insipid piece of coitus interruptus from Portland, Oregon, director Nicole Conn. Not only doesn't she have the courage to write and direct something that is uniquely her own.

Everything Relative
|
Our Critique Review: For all of the lesbian genre films there are (or actually aren't) out there, it is refreshing to watch a movie that has a complete collection of talent. While the plot was loosely written, the characters (and the portrayals of the characters) and their interaction as a syudy of lesbian lives - was interesting, enjoyable and worth sharing.

Female Perversions Starring: Tilda Swinton, Amy Madigan |
Our Critique Review: Eva Stephens (Tilda Swinton), a beautiful and sexy high-powered attorney, is up for appointment as a judge. But below her veneer of self-confidence lies a darker side, one in which she is driven by bizarre visions and sexual fantasies.

The Girl
Starring: Claire Keim, Agathe De La Boulaye
|
Our Critique Review: The stylish opening credits--featuring wisps of smoke curling sensually up and sideways--declare The Girl's intentions: This is going to be a modern film noir in which compulsive passions lead to violence and disaster.

Go Fish
Starring: Guinevere Turner, V.S. Brodie
|
Our Critique Review: Go Fish won acclaim in its initial release in 1994, probably because of its irreverence in gazing at the lives of a group of young lesbians in Chicago.
